In the car market the average price for a new car in the United States is $33,000 which is pretty high and for $10,000 the most you can get in the new car market is a basic supermini or hatchback.
However it's a different story in the used car market with some pretty cool cars for sale for under $10,000 which would've been unattainable to many when they were new.
Here is a list of the coolest cars you can buy for under $10,000 in the used car market
10-Maserati Quattroporte
This Italian luxury sedan is powered by either a 4.2L and 4.7L Ferrari V8 and was initially offered with a 6 speed DuoSelect electro-hydraulic manual which had a lot of issues and the clutch wore out very quickly but this was solved when Maserati offered the Quattroporte with a 6 speed ZF transmission which was a lot better. This Italian car when new was upwards of $100,000 but thanks to depreciation it can be now had for less then $10,000. However maintenance cost could be very high as it is not very reliable and parts are expensive.
9-Mercedes S-Class(W221)
This flagship luxury sedan from Mercedes can be had with many different engines options which include both diesel power and petrol power ranging from 4 cylinder motors and 6 cylinder motors to V8s and V12s. It is a very luxurious car with all the features you would expect from a modern day flagship Mercedes and a very luxurious and smooth ride. New these cars could cost from anywhere between just under $90,000 to just under $200,000 depending on the model you bought and the options you chose.The engines are also very powerful and refined also making this an pretty quick car however reliability may be problem especially with the big V8s and V12s in the lineup.
8-BMW 7-Series(E65)
This is the flagship sedan from BMW which comes with many luxurious features and a very comfortable and luxurious ride. It has different engine options ranging from straight 6s and V8s in both diesel and petrol along with a petrol V12. This car also has a lot of technology packed inside it and unlike most other big luxury sedans it handles very well with some sporty characteristics. New these cars could cost from anywhere between just under $76,000 and just above $122,000. However like most other old luxury cars it too has some reliability issues which might be expensive to fix as parts on these cars are pretty expensive.
7-Porsche Cayenne(9PA)
The first generation Cayenne was a pretty good attempt at a sporty SUV by a sports car maker.
This car handled very well on the road unlike most other SUVs at the time as you would expect from a Porsche SUV but still had the off-road capability of other SUVs. It was also a very luxurious on the inside and had a comfortable ride with refined engines. Thanks to depreciation now for under $10K you can get a top of the line Turbo or Turbo S models with twin turbo charged V8s making anywhere between 450hp to 542hp depending on the model year and whether it's a regular Turbo or a Turbo S.
The rest of the range, although not as powerful is still very refined and quick. When new these were priced from $42,200 all the way to $111,600. These aren't very bad on the reliability front but the higher end V8s might have some problems with maintenance and parts being expensive like most old luxury cars and SUVs.
6-Porsche Boxster(986)
The Porsche Boxster was the first modern age sports car by Porsche and a good one at that.
They were the first non-front engine Porsche to use a water cooled engine. The car used a horizontally opposed (flat) 6-cylinder engine. It used a mid-engine rear wheel drive layout unlike the bigger Porsche 911 which used rear-engine rear wheel drive layout. This meant this car has a near perfect 50-50 front and rear weight distribution and a low center of gravity giving it very good handling and on top of that it is a convertible which makes it more fun to drive. When new these would have set you back just above $40,000 but now can be found for well under $10,000 with enough cash left for fixing most issues that may come with this old Porsche and general maintenance.
5-BMW 7-Series(E38)
The E38 7-Series is one of the most popular 7-Series and one of the best. This car was way ahead of it's time and one of the best drivers cars in the luxury sedan segment. It is also popular in movies being featured in some well known movies like the transformers and the first transporter movie. This car became very popular after being featured in the James Bond movie Tomorrow never dies in which it was the Bond car and was featured in a car chase across a parking lot with Bond driving it from the backseat using his phone. New these cars were priced from $62,400 to $124,400. There can be a few issues with the car especially with the V8 and V12 models and like most cars on this list it had high maintenance costs and parts are not cheap.
4-Audi S4(B6)
This is fast, comfortable and sporty compact sedan. This car came with a 4.2L V8 which puts out 339bhp and 302lb.ft of torque mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed ZF automatic transmission. The car also comes with Audi's legendary Quattro all-wheel drive system.
New this car was price from $45,650 to $55,000 depending on options. Unlike other cars on this list this car is pretty reliable but there will still be a few issues that might be expensive.
3-Mercedes SL-Class(R230)
This car is a luxurious Grand Tourer with a lot of luxurious features and a very comfortable ride. It also is a roadster so it can give you the open top experience and handles very well which makes it a pretty good driver's car. This car comes with various petrol engines including a V6, a V8, a supercharged V8 and two twin turbo charged V12s with the SL65 AMG making over 600bhp.
Reliability might be a problem in the V12s and V8s with parts being very expensive. New, this car would've set you back anywhere from between $91,300 to $182,100 depending on the model and options.
2-BMW M3(E46)
This is one of the best generation of the M3 and for good reason. This car comes with a naturally aspirated straight 6 which gives out 338bhp and 269lb.ft of torque. These cars can easily be tuned and they handle really well. When they were new these cars could cost $47,995 for the coupe and $56,495 for the convertible. There might be maintenance costs but for well under $10,000 they are a great deal.
1-Porsche 911(996)
The first water cooled 911s can now be found on sale for under $10,000. The Turbo models are still pretty expensive but the base Carrera models are great and there are some really good deals on them. They come with a 3.6L horizontally opposed (flat) 6 which made 315bhp. The layout like all 911s today was the same used in the past models-rear mounted engine with rear wheel drive. The car also came with four wheel drive in some models. When new these cars started from $67,900 and went all the way to $179,900. The car is pretty reliable for but maintenance costs and parts are still pretty expensive.
